Selection Factors Details
Operating Environment - Type of Medium If the medium is a corrosive liquid (such as strong acid or alkali), shaft seals made of corrosion-resistant materials like fluoroelastomer (FKM) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) may be applicable. When sealing gases, it is necessary to consider their flammability or toxicity, and higher sealing performance is required for flammable and explosive gases.
Operating Environment - Temperature and Pressure In a high-temperature environment, the shaft seal needs to withstand high temperatures. For example, in a high-temperature oil pipeline system in a refinery, a graphite or metal bellows shaft seal may be required. Mechanical seals have better adaptability to high temperatures. The shaft seal must be able to withstand the working pressure of the system. In a high-pressure water pump, a balanced mechanical seal may be adopted to effectively distribute the pressure and reduce the wear of the sealing surface.
Rotational Speed of the Shaft Shafts with high rotational speeds have higher requirements for the frictional properties of shaft seals. For the shaft end sealing of high-speed motors, labyrinth seals or hydrodynamic seals may be needed to reduce friction and improve the reliability and service life of the seals.
Leakage Requirements In industries with extremely high leakage requirements, such as food processing and pharmaceuticals, advanced technologies like dry gas seals or magnetic seals may be the first choice. Dry gas seals achieve zero or extremely low leakage by introducing clean gas to form a gas film. Magnetic seals reduce leakage by using magnetic force to suspend the sealing components.
Installation and Maintenance Costs Packing seals have a simple structure, are easy to install, and have a relatively low cost. However, they need to replace the packing regularly and require more frequent maintenance. Mechanical seals have good sealing performance but high installation requirements. Nevertheless, they have a long service life and still have advantages in critical equipment when comprehensively considered.
Service Life and Reliability In continuously operating equipment in chemical production, shaft seals are required to work stably for a long time. Using reliable shaft seals with proven brands and models can reduce the risk of failure. High-end mechanical seal manufacturers improve the service life and reliability of shaft seals by optimizing materials and structures.
