What is Spring Energized Seal

Spring energized seals are usually made of high-performance fluoroplastic compounds and engineering plastics.

 

The typical material grade is:

 

PTFE (original and filled versions)

 

PEEK compound (unfilled and filled versions)

 

These materials have outstanding physical and technical properties, but they lack elasticity. They are best described as rigid. That is why different types of springs must be used to mechanically provide energy to the sealing lip.

 

Therefore, the technical term "spring energized sealing" reflects the design/structure of the sealing device, where the spring compensates for polymer materials with low memory/elasticity.
