All seals have a basic radial pressure in common to ensure tightness in pressureless condition.

Seals can be divided into three groups depending on how their basic radial pressure is generated.

Generated by a deformation of the flexible

sealing lips (grooved rings)

Generated by a deformation of the entire seal cross-section(compact seals)

Generated by pre-tightening the seal in axial

direction (cup seals)
