Oil Seal Failure Mode

failure mode:

 

Strong wear at the seal lip edge with appearance of grooves in the mating surface

 

failure cause:

 

a. wrong or too rough shaft surface (unsuitable system hardware / seal)

 

b. too high operating pressure

 

c. lack of lubrication

 

remedial measures:

 

a. follow surface recommendations

 

b. change shaft coating

 

c. change of sealing profile

 

d. improve lubrication
