A high-performance seal with a specific metal spring inserted in a substance like PTFE is known as a spring-energized lip seal. A very effective sealing effect is created when the system fluid pressure and the appropriate spring tension press the seal lip against the metal surface. The minor irregularity of the metal mating surface and the wear on the sealing lip are overcome by the elastic compensation offered by the spring, retaining the desired sealing performance.
